On the evening of June 24th Iris Ferguson, Lindsay Rodman and Andrea Charron will discuss the challenges and opportunities for North American Arctic security in the near term in a geopolitically contested world.  Representing US and Canadian perspectives, this engaging debate will consider the role of the militaries, security agencies, international organizations and local actors to protect and develop the North American Arctic.

Lindsay L. Rodman is currently the Executive Director of Leadership Council for Women in National Security. She was the first Council on Foreign Relations International Affairs Fellow (Canada) after leaving the Obama Administration, where she served in the Pentagon as Senior Advisor for International Humanitarian Policy.  Prior to her political appointment, she was an active duty judge advocate in the U.S. Marine Corps, serving in various roles, including as Deputy Legal Counsel to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and as the Operational Law Attorney for 1st Marine Division (FWD) in Afghanistan from 2010-2011.  Her last duty assignment as an active duty Marine was in the White House as Director for Defense Policy and Strategy at the National Security Council.  She remains in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves.  Prior to joining the Marine Corps, Lindsay was an associate at the law firm of Arnold & Porter LLP (now Arnold & Porter Kaye Scholer) in Washington, DC.  She is a graduate of Harvard Law School (JD, 2007), the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University (MPP, 2007), and Duke University (AB Mathematics, 2003).

Iris Ferguson is the current Council on Foreign Relations International Affairs Fellow (Canada) and a Senior Advisor for the United States Air Force focusing on Arctic security and policy.   Previously she served for White House Office of Advance, assisting in the execution and strategy for Vice Presidential engagements overseas; the Department of Commerce’s International Trade Administration, structuring and implementing the first federal investment promotion program, SelectUSA; and as a national security and foreign policy legislative aide for then Senator Joseph Biden on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.  She has an MA from Johns Hopkins’ Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) and a BA from the University of Arkansas.

Andrea Charron (PhD, RMC)  is Director of the Centre for Defence and Security Studies and Associate Professor at the University of Manitoba.  She is also one of the co-Leads of the North American and Arctic Defence and Security Network. She serves on the DND’s Defence Advisory Board, has published in numerous peer-reviewed journals and is on the editorial board of the Canadian Naval Review and the Canadian Foreign Policy Journal. Dr. Charron worked for various federal departments including the Privy Council Office in the Security and Intelligence Secretariat and Canada’s Revenue Agency.
