Dr. Romain Chuffart

Dr. Romain Chuffart is the Nansen Professor in Arctic Studies at the University of Akureyri in Iceland. He is the President and Managing Director of The Arctic Institute. He holds a PhD in law for Durham University (UK) and a MA in Polar Law from the University of Akureyri. Romain was also deputy director of the Law and Global Justice at Durham research cluster (2022-23). He previously worked at the Polar Cooperation Research Centre in Kobe, Japan (2018-19) and several visiting positions in Northern Europe, the most recent being Copenhagen University (2024). In 2018, Romain also worked for several months in St. Petersburg, Russia. Romain focuses mainly on international law, peace, justice, and Arctic governance, including human rights and the rights of Indigenous Peoples, Arctic cooperation and the law of sea. He also conducts more theoretical research on public international law combining insights from political theory, international relations, political geography, and other social sciences. Recently his work has been concerned with new technologies for climate protection and ocean governance.
