Philippe Brient

Northern Advisor

Philippe Brient is a seasoned expedition leader, mountaineer, and search and rescue volunteer with over two decades of experience operating in some of the world’s most remote and demanding environments. Originally from France and fluent in both French and English, Philippe brings a strong combination of international field expertise, technical skill, and leadership to Arctic and alpine operations.

A dedicated member of the Canadian Rangers for 23 years, Philippe holds the rank of Master Corporal, reflecting his long-standing commitment and leadership in northern sovereignty and community engagement.

Philippe has led and supported scientific expeditions across the Arctic, including missions to Svalbard and Greenland, where he expertly navigated and managed the logistics of remote and glaciated landscapes. He provided crucial leadership in safely moving research teams through difficult terrain, ensuring mission success through his deep knowledge of expedition planning, navigation, and risk management.

For over a decade, Philippe served as the head of his local Search and Rescue team, where he honed expertise in swiftwater rescue, flat ice rescue, boat operations, avalanche safety, lost person behavior, and cold weather survival. He is also trained in Arctic survival, has worked as a firefighter, and has participated in multiple NATO military training operations, contributing to international readiness and interoperability in high-stakes environments.

Philippe and his family regularly undertake extended Arctic expeditions, traveling by snowmobile through some of Canada’s most remote northern landscapes, including a recent 1,600 km journey from Fort McPherson to Old Crow and Herschel Island. These expeditions reflect a shared family commitment to traditional travel, cold weather survival, and land-based learning across generations.

With deep roots in both alpine and Arctic environments, Philippe exemplifies adaptability, preparedness, and cross-cultural leadership. His contributions span search and rescue command, expeditionary logistics, scientific field support, and international civil-military operations—making him a trusted leader in both national and global discussions on remote operations and Arctic resilience.
