Sasha Mathieu

Research Fellow
Sasha Mathieu is a master’s student in Strategic Studies at the University of Calgary, interested in Arctic and European security, NATO, and critical undersea infrastructure. A recipient of the Canada Graduate Scholarship (CGS) and the Department of National Defence’s MINDS Supplement, her research examines Arctic security dynamics, allied cooperation, and Canada’s role in transatlantic defence frameworks. As a francophone and Alma & Baxter Ricard Foundation boursier, Sasha is committed to contributing to the growing body of French-language scholarship on Canadian and Arctic security.

Professionally, Sasha has worked across multiple federal departments, including Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED), the Financial Transactions and Report Analysis Centre of Canada (FINTRAC), and Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO), where she supported policy development and strategic analysis related to science diplomacy, defence procurement, and terrorism financing. She is actively involved in the community, contributing to the planning of the Arctic360 2026 conference and serving in student leadership roles, including with the Strategic Studies Students’ Consortium (S3C), for which she was awarded a Youth MINDS grant for a proposal examining the future of Canada-United States defence relations from a youth perspective.

Prior to moving to Calgary, Sasha graduated top of her class as co-Valedictorian from the University of Ottawa, earning an Honours bachelor’s degree in International Studies and Modern Languages.
